License Services Installation Modes

License Services version 5.7 and later offers three installation options, one of which must be selected at the start of the installation process of the standalone License Services package:

  • Public Cloud: selecting this option indicates that License Services server will be installed on a virtual machine accessible via the public Internet. This is targeted at and has been tested in using the Microsoft® Azure® platform.
  • Private Cloud: selecting this option indicates that License Services will be installed on a virtual Azure platform that is accessible within a private network, or a virtual machine (say, hosted by a virtualization server or even a local virtual machine hosted in Hyper-V, for example).
  • Physical: this indicates that License Services will be installed on physical PC hardware, that is, a local desktop. This option represents the only configuration of License Services available prior to version 5.7.

If you have selected the wrong Installation Type / Startup type during installation

If an unwanted mode is selected and installation is complete, what you do next depends on the version of License Services in use:

  • If running License Services version 5.7, it is necessary to uninstall and reinstall License Services to choose a different start up type.
  • If running License Services version 5.8 or later, you can alter the Startup type after installation by running License Manager in Administration mode:
    1. Open Tools | Options | License Manager as an Administrator
    2. Change the Startup Type to either LocalDesktop (=Physical), Private Cloud or Public Cloud.
    3. Click OK or Apply.
    4. The License Service will automatically restart and your new configuration will be applied.

If you change your Installation Type/Startup Type and already have licenses bound to Machine IDs, these licenses may be invalidated and will need to be reissued. If you already have Machine ID-bound licenses and need to alter your operation mode, please contact your local Datamine office for advice.

The License Service

The License Service is a background task that runs alongside your Datamine applications. It is started either manually, via the License Manager or Windows Services Control Panel, or (by default) automatically when either the Datamine Tooltray or a Datamine Studio or other supported application is launched.

The service continually checks that your product(s) are permitted to run or, where more modular licensing is relevant, whether particular functions within your product(s) are permitted to run.

If the License Service is not running, you won't be able to use applications that depend on it. You can see the status of the License Service in the Options dialog. You can also use this area to stop, start or restart the service.
